Overview
Ledger Live Desktop is Ledger’s official desktop client that pairs with Ledger hardware wallets (Nano S Plus, Nano X, and compatible models) to provide a secure, user-friendly interface for everyday crypto management. The app is designed so that private keys stay on the device: Ledger Live prepares transactions and the Ledger hardware device signs and authorizes them. This separation reduces the chance of key theft and provides a reliable environment for interacting with blockchains.
Download & install
Always download Ledger Live from the official Ledger site (ledger.com/start). Installers are available for Windows, macOS, and major Linux distributions. Before installing, verify you are on the correct domain and, where possible, verify provided checksums or signatures to ensure the installer is untampered.
System requirements
- Operating system: Windows 10/11, macOS (latest two versions), or current mainstream Linux distributions.
- Hardware: USB port for device connection. For Nano X Bluetooth pairing requires a compatible Bluetooth adapter on desktop.
- Network: Internet connection recommended for updates, swap quotes, and portfolio synchronization.
Setup & pairing
- Open Ledger Live and choose "Get started".
- Select your Ledger device model and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Connect your device via USB (or Bluetooth for Nano X where supported) and unlock it using your PIN on-device.
- Complete the guided setup: create or confirm your recovery phrase and install firmware if prompted.
- Add accounts for the blockchains you want to manage via the "Accounts" tab.
Accounts & asset management
Ledger Live Desktop lets you add and manage multiple accounts per blockchain. It displays balances, transaction history, token metadata, and portfolio value. For tokens or assets not natively supported, the app may provide guidance or integrations with third-party services to access those assets.
Receiving & sending
To receive funds, generate a receive address in Ledger Live and verify it on the Ledger device before sharing. To send funds, prepare the transaction in Ledger Live — specify destination, amount and fees — then confirm and sign on your Ledger device. The device screen is the final authority for addresses and amounts, protecting you from host-side tampering or phishing.
Firmware updates & Manager
The Manager in Ledger Live Desktop handles firmware updates and installs coin-specific apps on your device. Firmware updates are critical for security; Ledger Live will notify you when an update is available. Follow on-screen instructions and confirm each step on-device during updates. If an update fails, Ledger Live provides recovery steps; contact official support if the issue persists.
Staking, swaps & partner services
Ledger Live integrates trusted partners for in-app swaps and fiat on/off-ramps. Swap quotes are provided by liquidity partners — review the quote and fees before accepting. For staking, Ledger Live supports multiple proof-of-stake networks, enabling delegation and reward monitoring while keeping keys on-device. Validator selection, fees, and unbonding periods vary per network; always research validators carefully.
Security model & best practices
Ledger Live Desktop’s security model separates the user interface from sensitive cryptographic material. Private keys remain stored inside the device’s secure element and never leave the hardware. To stay secure:
- Download Ledger Live only from ledger.com/start and verify the installer if possible.
- Never share your 24-word recovery phrase; Ledger will never ask for it.
- Always confirm addresses and transaction details on-device before signing.
- Use a strong, memorable PIN and consider the optional passphrase feature for additional wallet separation (advanced users only).
- Keep desktop OS, Ledger Live, and device firmware updated to receive security patches.
Privacy & telemetry
Ledger Live Desktop collects minimal telemetry to improve user experience and product quality. Telemetry settings can be adjusted in the app. Consult Ledger’s privacy policy to learn exactly what data is collected and how to opt out of optional telemetry.
Troubleshooting & common issues
- Device not detected: Try another USB cable or port, ensure the cable supports data transfer, restart Ledger Live and the device.
- Bluetooth pairing fails: Ensure your desktop Bluetooth adapter is compatible and enabled; re-pair the device from Bluetooth settings if needed.
- Missing balances: Use the "Repair" or "Resync" functions for individual accounts to refresh transaction history.
- Firmware update problems: Follow Ledger Live recovery flows and contact official support if device becomes unresponsive. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone claiming to help.
- Swap quote errors: Quotes can change quickly; ensure sufficient funds for the swap and retry or change providers if a quote expires.
FAQ
- Can Ledger Live Desktop access my private keys?
- No. Private keys remain on your Ledger device. Ledger Live only prepares transactions and forwards signing requests to the hardware.
- What if I lose my Ledger device?
- If you have your recovery phrase, you can restore your wallet on a new Ledger or compatible wallet. Without the phrase, funds cannot be recovered.
- Is Ledger Live Desktop free?
- Yes — Ledger Live is free to download and use. Third-party services used within the app (swaps, fiat partners) may charge fees.
